10 Simple Ways to Make Giving Up Sugar Easier

HOW TO MAKE GIVING UP SUGAR EASIER

I’m not going to lie, giving up sugar isn’t easy. Truth is, sugar is addictive. There’s even suggestion that consuming sugar can impact the brain in the same way cocaine or other drugs would. The point here being that quitting sugar is harder than simply deciding to. BUT there are lots of things you can do to make it much easier. I’m here to help!

I’m sharing some key tips from my 8 Week Online Program to help you give up sugar easier with less cravings and more energy whilst enjoying delicious food.

  1. Focus on what you are adding IN to your diet not what you are getting rid of. You are going to enjoy an ABUNDANCE of fresh, real food that will love your body back. Crowd out the sugar by including plentiful amounts of colourful vegetables and nutrient rich wholefood ingredients.
  2. Set up your kitchen for success. Make sure that when you open up your pantry and fridge you feel inspired to make a good choice that will nourish your body. Get rid of tempting foods high in refined sugar and fill your kitchen with delicious food that supports your goals.
  3. Avoid replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners. These have a negative impact on your long term health. Whilst you might think that they “trick” your taste buds they have a negative impact on your health and will only leave you craving more sweet things.
  4. Make sure you are eating well balanced meals. Aim to include protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fat and fibre in each meal. When your meals are nutritionally balanced you will notice a big difference in reduced cravings and consistent energy levels. If you need help here, I show you how to make balanced meals without fuss in my 8 Week Online Nutrition Program.
  5. Don’t be afraid of fat. Healthy fat sources such as avocado, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds and oil fish are not only beneficial for your health, they will help to reduce cravings and provide a source of slow burning fuel.
  6. When we eat sugary foods it begins a process of blood sugar level changes that influence our cravings for more and so the cycle begins. Get rid of foods that have high amounts of refined sugar and watch out for hidden names of sugars in foods (I share these in the program if you are unsure). Embrace savoury foods as much as you can!
  7. Be prepared fro cravings. When you first quit sugar the reality is your body needs a little time to adjust. During this time this is when cravings kick in. Be prepared with a ‘tool kit’ of things that you can try such as going for a walk, getting fresh air, exercise, having a high protein snack, relaxation techniques or having a good laugh with a friend.
  8. Sugar quitting hacks such as adding cinnamon or sweet potato to recipes or satisfying your palate with flavour boosters such as spice, citrus, fresh herbs and good fats can all help.
  9. Establish your why! WHY are you giving up sugar and how important is this to you? If you are rock solid about your why and how this is going to positively impact your life remind yourself of this when cravings or temptations present.
  10. Make sure you get plenty of good quality sleep. Being tired and not sleeping well will make you crave sugar for energy.

The best way to quit sugar is with PURPOSE. Whether it’s to feel better, improve your health or to help others such as the febfast campaign, find your reason ‘why’.

Giving up sugar is better with others. Community support is key and if you’ve been thinking about ditching the sweet stuff for a while, now is your chance to join a whole community that are improving their health whilst helping to raise funds for disadvantaged youth in Australia with febfast.

To find out more about febfast visit their website. It’s free to join! If quitting sugar isn’t your thing you can also hit pause on alcohol or something or your choice.
