What are Food Allergies and Intolerances?

Food allergies and intolerances affect many children and adults. They are the body’s reaction to specific food ingredients, or in other words, your body’s way of letting you know that a certain food doesn’t work for you.

Food allergies and intolerances affect many children and adults. They are the body’s reaction to specific food ingredients, or in other words, your body’s way of letting you know that a certain food doesn’t work for you.

What is the difference between food allergies and intolerance?

Food Allergy

= An Immune System reaction to a food. Food allergies can be life threatening in the event of anaphylaxis.

Food Intolerance

= The inability to digest a particular food.

Currently there is no cure for food allergies and the only successful method to manage food allergies or intolerances is to avoid the foods containing that specific allergen or food component.

Common Food Allergy Symptoms:

  • Swelling of the lips and throat
  • Diarrhoea and/or vomiting
  • Dry, itchy throat and tongue
  • Itchy skin, rash, hives
  • Sore, red and itchy eyes
  • Coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath
  • A runny or blocked nose
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness, faintness or collapse

Common Food Intolerance Symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Gas/ flatulence
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Wheezing
  • Runny nose
  • Skin conditions such as eczema
  • Hives
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Compromised immune system
  • Congested sinus
  • Hayfever like symptoms
Abdominal pain or cramping

The most common Food Allergens include:

  • Crustaceans
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Milk/ dairy
  • Peanuts
  • Soy
  • Tree nuts
  • Sesame seeds
  • Gluten (from Wheat, Rye, Barley, Oats and their products)
  • Sulphites (preservative)

Food Intolerances seem to be varying depending on the individual but common foods that cause complaints include:

  • Wheat and Gluten
  • Dairy
  • Soy
  • Yeast
  • Preservatives
  • Grains
