Stay Hydrated with this Healthy Twist

Drinking enough water is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. In fact, water is essential to most bodily functions. Your body needs water for many different processes and functions including digestion, absorbing nutrients, to help you move, getting rid of waste products and to regulate your body temperature.

With no way for the body to store water you need to ensure your body is properly hydrated everyday.

Depending on your age and activity level your water intake will vary. Women should aim for approximately 2 litres of water per day (about 8 cups) and men 2.6L (that’s about 10 cups).

Tips to help you stay hydrated and drink enough water

  • Have water easily accessible. This might mean having a jug of water handy or your favourite water bottle filled and within reach (such as on your work desk).
  • Invest in a good quality reusable water bottle that holds enough volume to encourage you to drink more water.
  • Get in to the habit of drinking at least half of your daily water intake needs before lunch time. At lunch time assess how much you have had. Set your goals for the rest of the day with how much more water you need to drink to meet your needs.
  • Avoid too much caffeine which can make you go to the toilet more and possibly dehydrate your body. It’s best to hydrate with caffeine free fluids.
  • Water is the best way to hydrate your body. If you prefer flavoured drinks, instead of sugary or artificially sweetened drinks, add natural flavours to your water such as lemon, lime, herbs and fruit.

Add them to your water bottle to infuse flavour and natural sweetness to your water without sugar or as a hot or cold brew. To add a little extra zest you can infuse into sparkling water or add fresh fruit and herbs such as infusing the Lemon & Lime Brew Bags into cold water and adding fresh slices of lemon and lime and fresh mint leaves for a hydrating and refreshing drink.

Being a naturally sweet way to infuse flavour into your water this could also be a handy way to encourage kids to drink more water instead of cordial or other drinks that contain sugar, artificial sweeteners and preservatives.
